Usually you go through different stages with your braces. I didn't get rubber bands until I had had my braces for at least 6-8 months. It's different for each person. Your teeth have to actually move through the bone (that's why they get so sore) and this movement takes different amounts of time in each person. When you are at the proper stage in your alignment, you probably will be given the bands (the metal band around the tooth) that have the hooks on them for the elastics (that's what the orthodontist called my little rubber bands). This may be old-school, as I am from a small city, so I hope I'm not completely wrong. It will be worth it, though.
