outpost 4 general question

  • Hi
i have some questions about outpost 4
well i running now outpost 2.7 last built , i can't upgrade to oupost 4 , i should upgrade my license

i would like to know that
outpost 4 with the only plugins attack detect and the feature to download ruleset ImproveNet , and the other plugins antispy and so on off , unload (drop out) is light like outpost 2.7 ?

well i fear to try a trial version , because i 'm scarry to screw my system ,that work good right now , i had bad experieces with outpost 2.7 and upgrade

so any advises are welcome :D

  • If you had Vista operating system, you would install the latest version, so you are not right there. A lot of people use Outpost, just like others use other makes. I do not find that it hogs more resource.

Where do you get the idea that most use comodo or armor? I know people use Bitdefender others use Norton or MacAffee. It is preference, as to what people use. If not enough people used Outpost, then the company would not survive, in my humble opinion.

watching many forum , and polls
some time ago outpost was the king of the firewall , almost everybody wants to install it
now many outpost users switch to comodo or online armor

  • I would suggest you write and ask Agnitum. I have been using them since version 1 and I have just put the latest one on my old laptop, which has XP, which my neighbour bought off me last year, and it only has 512mb of ram and two lots of 10Gig hard drive and it works ok, according to him. His PC has 512mb of ram, but plenty of hard drive and he has version 4. I have not put the latest on there as he is going to format the machine and get more ram, but it has been working ok too.

I believe in this day and age a lot of people have at least 1gig of ram. It of course depends what you are doing and how much you have open as to how secure you want your machine, but as I said, your best bet and the only people to answer your question would be Agnitum.

It also depends whether there is a demand for a lighter version. If I did not have a lifetime upgrade and a good anti-virus, I would probably go for the Security Suite, but my anti-virus runs out in October 2010.

Just re-read your thread and Outpost Firewall does not have anti-virus, it is the Security Suite that has anti-virus included. Some companies do not offer just a firewall anymore, I have noticed, they only offer Security Suite, or anti-virus separate.

  • Outpost 4.0 - What to Expect (http://outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18611) may help.
Since you are using v. 2.7, you may want to have a look at these as well:
    Outpost 3 - What to expect (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15061)
    Outpost 3.5 - What to expect (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16486)

  • Well, let us put it this way, it will still work, but there are no updates for it, so probably security is not as good as the later ones. In my opinion, it is always better to have the later versions and version 4 is still current and you should still get updates. Hopefully someone else can concur with what I say here, or you could write to Agnitum direct and ask them, of course.

  • Well, if you set a restore point on your machine, then you can always go back if there are problems, so you will be able to try it out.

Your best bet is to save your configuration and then to remove all traces of the old version, but make sure that you have, if you have saved it in your download folder, saved the old version, so that you can re-install it. Probably the best way to remove it is in safe mode.

It has been nearly a year since I used that version, although my neighbour has it installed. You can disable the plugins, as to other question, I cannot answer for sure, as that is a old version you are using.

  • Hello mantrasiva,

The only way to test this is to install it and see for yourself. I would be surprised if OPF 4.0 was lighter on resources than OPF 2.7 even if most of the plugins are disabled. The later versions are more secure, and with the likes of Self Protection included there will be a bit more resource usage generally.

You can reduce resource usage by only using the plugins that you need. I use OPF 4.0 with all standard (built in) plugins disabled, except for Attack Detection. I have no need for any of the others. I do use more of the 3rd party plugins, such as HTTPLog, TrafLED and Blockpost. I have found that very large blocklists with the BP plugin can increase usage considerably. You can do other things like disabling logging as well; I only enable it when testing. These of course also apply to 2.7 and the rest up to 4.0 as well. I really miss the plugin architecture in the 2008 range and the options they can give a user.

Create a restore point/backup image and give it a go. The Extended Outpost Uninstall/Reinstall Instructions (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7188) should be checked out. The unistaller especially in the older versions left quite a bit behind, and if you are going to give 4.0 a go I would try to clean things up as much as possible to avoid any issues.

Lastly, test OPF 4.0 with the full 30 day trial before considering purchasing it. You may find OPF 2.7 to be more than adequate for your needs. I remember it as being one of the best versions that Agnitum ever brought out, at least on my box. ;)

well i tried oupost 2008 and is amazing slow , is a resource hog
i tried on several pc ,on every pc the brand new version of outpost slow down every pc ,they are new pc

i like outpost , i know there are firewall like comodo super light that have better scores then outpost
but for me outpost is the best

do you think agnitum will make a light version of outpost 2008 or at last a custom install , so we can install only the components we need , so we make outpost more light

ps. i'm a big outpost FAN , i'm ascertain that few few few people like the new outpost and really few people install the new outpost

almost everybody use comdo or buy online armor that are really really more light of outpost

one question , i have nod32 , and ewido anti malware
is outpost 2.7 enough? for my safe ?
    or is too old

    thanks
    an loving outpost user

well i purchased a license in the period of outpost 2.7
but the new version of outpost , i don't like them
they are too heavy i tried them , if i compare to comodo (one of the best maybe the best need 4mb of service 600k of gui) or online armor
although i'm a big fan of outpost , the new version that needs (60mb of ram to work) and slow down my pc and connetion , it's a nightmare

i fear that the future of outpost will be new heavy heavy version

why don't agnitum code outpost with a custom install , so we can select the components

for example lot of uses don't want an antivirus (i have nod32 last version) or an anti spy
for example a middle users (like me) want oupost like the version 2.7 with a leak protection , nothing else

    kind regards
