Historically, what periods of the year does the stock market tend to
move positively, neutrally or negatively? Specifically, I would like
to receive an Excel spreadsheet that provides the average percentage
of change in the S&P 500 Index for each calendar week (numbered 1 ?
52) over the most recent 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 year periods. This
study should use weekly closing prices. For each of the periods, one
column should display the percentage change from the previous week,
while another column should display the cumulative change. The study
should use data up to the end of December 2005.
Recommended spreadsheet setup:
Column 1 heading ? Week (with 1 ? 52 listed by row below)
Column 2 heading ? 3 Yr Avg (2003 ? 2005) with two subheadings for
percentage change from previous week and for cumulative percentage
change
Column 3 heading ? 5 Yr Avg (2001 ? 2005) with two subheadings as above
Etc.
This one is easy. Pick an appropriate index; use historical data from
yahoo finance and then throw in a little arithmetic.
