Director of the Leptospirosis laboratory Dr. Marquita Gittens says Barbadians are not taking the dangers of Dengue Fever and Leptospirosis as seriously as they should.
She says that an even greater concern is that a large percentage of the cases which are being reported could have been avoided.
During an open house session today, the Director revealed that people have become so accustomed to hearing about the diseases that they are dismissing how hazardous they are.
She pointed out that the number of people infected with Leptospirosis had decreased significantly with 63 people testing positive up to October last year, from just under 400 recorded cases between 2002 and 2004.
Dr. Gittens adds that misdiagnosis of both diseases is still occurring but that the lab is constantly doing research to reduce the likelihood.
