Blocking apps - no prompt
Published by: wktd 2010-03-18
  • I am using OP Pro v4 and it was all fine untill I've reinstalled Windows XP. I've made a clean install of XP Pro SP2, updated everything and then installed OP v4. And in Rulez Wizard it blocks a lot of apps, including browsers, mIRC, Skype etc with NO prompt at all. In the log viewer it says OUT REFUSED and Reason: Block all activity
Even it blocked itself from updating at first !?!?
When it runs in Allow Most it's ok, then I switch to Rules Wizard and it starts displayng prompts and creating auto rules eg. when I start mIRC
But on the next restart it stil blocks apps with no rules. Like in Block Most mode. It should detect eg. Winamp and display prompt to allow/block/create rules but it doesn't. It just blocks connection with no message. I've reinstalled windows again and it's all the same :(

  • 00:34:36 opera.exe OUT REFUSED TCP www.opera.com HTTP Block All Activity

New config several times, tryed advanced and normal behaviour...

You seem right, reinstall is up next. I won't give up (easily) :D

  • Hello zBoost,

Did you import an older configuration file from a safe backup after you reinstalled your OS? I would suggest creating a NEW CONFIGURATION from scratch in this case and letting OPF 4.0 create new rules via the Rules Wizard.

  • If it is any further help to this problem, there is a way to maually create rules if Rules Wizard is not doing what it is supposed to be doing. A user can right-click the application log in the Event Viewer and create the rule that way. It will add to the existing rule (if one exists), but it will also add the same rule multiple times. Some editing of the application ruleset may be required afterwards to remove duplicate rules. This will help create a BASIC workable rule that can be further tweaked to tighten it further for that particular application. That may get you started at least.

  • Edit: Rickster, I'm sorry we are posting against each other. Since you got here first I'll bow out and let you continue.

    No problem Uncle Manny. ;)

    ZBoost,

Perhaps a reinstall of Outpost may help? It certainly looks like Outpost is not doing what it is supposed to be doing on your system.

  • The way I read your post this seems to be normal OP behavior.

Apps with no rules are blocked until rules are made unless in Allow Most. Once rules are made then the rules will be used.

In Block Most it doesn't give a prompt. The firewall blocks everything not specifically allowed. Prompts only happen in the Wizard mode.

Am I interpreting wrongly what you said?

  • I have Attack Detection enabled, yes.
    Real mistery...
I'll continue trying to put this in the right direction tomorrow ;)

Is the Attack Detection plugin perhaps blocking your apps? The plugins work independently from the firewall and rules.... Disable the plugin completely, and check the Attack Detection GUI area as shown in one of my screenshots above for details to see if it has been stopping network access. There should be an audible alarm each time the plugin works.... have you got sound disabled?! ;)

Disable the plugin completely to eliminate the possibility of this affecting the problem.

  • Try deleting your existing rules for a particular app so that Outpost creates a new rule for that app. Make sure you press "Apply" after deleting the rule.

  • I have seen in some instances what you are describing. For some reason OP will not create additional rules for apps in RW mode in a freshly made "untweaked" configuration.

On the assumption that you have created a new configuration, try stopping and restarting the app to see if OP creates the rules required. Do not be tempted to disable Outpost, use Allow Most or placing apps in the Trusted Applications List in order to make things work.

Rules Wizard Mode needs some time to fully create rules for certain applications. The best way is to stay in RW mode longer so that OP can create the appropriate rules. This may mean stopping and restarting an application several times and doing a couple of reboots. Programs such as instant messenger progs can be a real pain since they need multiple rules in order to function properly via the firewall and can be extensive, especially as they can use multiple ports.

You can test your rules by locking down Outpost into Block Most Mode. If you have created enough rules for these apps, then they will work flawlessly. If they do not, you should check your Network Activity via the main GUI as these will give a clue as to what is being blocked and why. Then its time to go back to RW mode to get the additional rules needed.

Im wondering if you have Attack Detection enabled?

  • I've started from scratch. I did new config now again and it is the same thing.

  • Let's just stick with the browser.

If OP blocked your browser then it should have logged that and listed the name of the rule which caused it to happen. If indeed that is the case - your browser blocked by a rule - then there is no popup. You don't get a warning if things are blocked. It just happens.

If you can post the log entry where your browser is blocked and the corresponding rule we should be able to figure this out.

Edit: Rickster, I'm sorry we are posting against each other. Since you got here first I'll bow out and let you continue.

  • And again, it is the same. OP keeps blocking almost every app wich needs connection in rules wizard after reinstalling. I have Attack Detection enabled, yes.

Ok I will try to explain it again.
I am in Wizard Prompt and I open my browser, type adress and it can't connect. OP blocks outgoing connection without saying anything at all about rules, etc. No windows/messages/prompts appear to me. As i know it should display dialog box where I choose action - allow/block/create rules. Thats what I don't get. Like it doesn't recognize the application.

Now what I do is to switch to Allow Most and while the browser is loading the page or any program like Skype, mIRC has connected and running, switch back to Rules Wizard. Then it detects the app and displays me the dialog box requesting action - allow/block/create rule.

Something is wrong and I don't have clue...

    ...
Yes I understand you and I'm trying. I did couple of restarts but the only way it works is what I've explained in this post earlier. And I don't know what exactly goes wrong with a fresh windows install 2nd time again... It was working perfect before the reinstallation, detecting everything from the first time it runs.
